Western Front
will be showing from June 5 to 27 a group exhibition of videos dealing with a very up-to-date matter: the transience of people and cultures. Through video collages and interviews five artists explore themes as different as immigration and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in a very personal approach. Don’t miss the dim sum brunch with curator and artists on June 7 at noon.

Jack Shadbolt (1909-1998) is one of Canada’s most important artists. He is known for his paintings and murals that draw from his personal experiences and from the social and political conflicts that have taken place in British Columbia’s and world history such as the struggles of the First Nations, the Second World War, and environmental movement. Jack Shadbolt: Underpinnings is a celebration of the artist’s centenary and includes over 150 drawings and sketches from the Collection of the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery [more]

One of the most sought-after photographers of our time, top-ten on international photography auctions, shows at Moma and White Cube, will be showing from May 30th to September 20th at the Vancouver Art Gallery. His work is in tune with contemporary subjects such as globalization, mass production and consumerism. For the VAG show he chose over 130 works from every period of his career.

Together with the other three shows opening this Saturday – Anthony Hernandez, Stan Douglas and the Emily Carr and Shadbolt, the VAG is a mandatory destination for Vancouverites this summer.

Arthur Erickson and Lili Vieira de Carvalho

One of the most influential Canadian architects, Arthur Erickson was known for his use of glass in very elegant buildings. I had the pleasure and honour to have met him last December during the celebration of Diane Farris Gallery’s 25th anniversary. We chatted about Brazilian architecture and the adventure of building a modern city from scratch in the 60s, Brasilia. A gentleman and a very talented man.

Artspeak – Postage Stamp

Kim Kennedy Austin has designed a postage stamp for Artspeak. The project is the result of an invitation to the artist to intervene in some aspect of the gallery’s daily operations. The 54¢ Canadian domestic stamp will be used by Artspeak in the upcoming months to mail invitations, letters, and bills.[more]

It was about time to show a survey of artists born around the 80s. The New Museum in New York is up for the task. Fifty artists from twenty-five countries will be presented until July 5th in the first exhibition of the kind in the United States filling the entire building on the Bowery. The selection was made by more than 150 curators worldwide and many of the artists will be showing in a museum for the first time. Generational diversity is the motto.

Leandro Erlich: Swimming Pool

Argentinian artist Leandro Erlich is an illusionist. Conceived over ten years ago, Swimming Pool found its perfect home at the Duplex gallery at P.S.1. Viewers in both floors experience the sensation of being at the border or at the bottom of a swimming pool. It’s funny and disorienting.
This installation can be viewed until October 2009 at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, NY.
